Graded VHS

How to spot a resealed VHS before you pay for it

Reshrinking a tape is cheap and the result can look convincing. These are the tells that survive a good reseal job.

Shrink wrap equipment costs very little, and a tape that was opened in 1994 can be made to look untouched. Grading exists largely because of this. If you're buying raw — or buying graded from a photo — here is what to actually look at.

Look at the seams, not the shine

Factory wrap was applied by specific machines, and each studio's wrap has its own seam placement and fold pattern. A reseal usually produces seams in the wrong place, or a fold that is too neat and too symmetrical. Original wrap is often slightly imperfect in a consistent, era-appropriate way.

Overly tight wrap is a warning, not a feature

Thirty-year-old wrap relaxes. It gathers, it dimples slightly at the corners, it is rarely drum-tight. A tape that looks vacuum-formed to the box is more likely to be recent than pristine.

Check for the right furniture

Many factory-sealed tapes carry era-correct details that are hard to fake and easy to forget: a hanging tab, a price or promotional sticker printed under the wrap, a studio watermark in the plastic itself. A sticker sitting on top of the wrap when it should be beneath it is a straightforward fail.

Weight and rattle

An empty or swapped case is more common than people expect at the high end. If you can handle the item, a tape that feels light or shifts oddly inside deserves a much closer look.

The honest answer about photos

Most of these tells do not survive a compressed listing photo taken at an angle. If a tape is expensive and raw, either see it in person, buy from someone whose return policy makes you whole, or buy it already graded. The grading fee is almost always cheaper than being wrong.

Why this shows up in the price data

Verified sales for graded tapes and raw tapes of the same title diverge sharply, and the gap is not really a condition premium — it is the cost of certainty. That spread is the market pricing exactly the risk described above.
